DPCNews 028 - Use-by dates of PT/MT materials

September 2010

1- Introduction

In the June 21-25, 2010 PRI-NADCAP meeting, held in Singapore, the topic of the use-by dates of non-aqueous wet developer (NAWD) spray cans used in PT was raised.

Some in the attendance said that the used-by dates mentioned on these spray cans are for commercial purpose only. In other words, these spray cans could be used beyond their used-by date; should the spraying fulfil the requirement of an even coating, the developer is considered as right.
We think it very useful to give you some points to think about.

Suggested definitions of some PT terms left out of the ISO 12706:2009 Standard

August 2010
Document updated in November 2012

In our paper titled "ISO 12706:2009 standard: Missed opportunities"’ published on our Website, we displayed some PT terms which we have not found in this standard.

As a 9-year time span was necessary since the ISO 12706:2000 standard revision, it is not yet too late to begin to think about  the next ISO 12706:2009 standard revision which, let us hope, will be published before 2018!

Introduction

ISO-3452 (1998-2008), ISO-9934 (2001-2002) and ISO-3059 (2001) standards, for liquid penetrant and magnetic particle testing are written using the International System of Units (SI), aka Le Système International D’Unités (BIPM, 2006). ISO 1000 (ICS 01 060) (1992) details the SI units and gives guidelines regarding their multiples.

PT test panels: Criteria for choosing ones for on-site use

June 2010

We are always delighted when readers send us emails to get answers to questions they cannot find the right answer to elsewhere.
Not only we are happy to answer them, but quite often such a request is an opportunity for us writing a new paper that should be of some interest for everyone!

Early April 2010 one of our regular readers asked a question about follow-up of on-site PT inspections.
Which test panels should he use : standardized ones, or others?

Suggested definitions of some MT terms left out of the EN 1330-7:2005 standard

In our paper titled "MT Lexicon (English/French)" published in March 2010 on our Website, we gave a translation in French of many terms used in MT.

Definition of some of them is given in the EN 1330-7:2005 standard.

Due to technical improvements of MT, such as new magnetisation techniques or new devices to make MT a more reliable method, we think it useful to introduce new terms.
