Yves Delayac, of the Test and Measurement Laboratory of RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens or Paris public transport operator) at Boissy-Saint-Léger (France), informed us, with great sadness, of the Alain Lebrethon’s passing away.

Alain jointed RATP in 1984 and retired in August 2008. He lost his life after an attack by youths in the parking of his condo in Vitry-sur-Seine (France) on Saturday, 12 January 2013 at about 7.00 p.m.

It is with great emotion and sadness that we announce his passing away, which struck with grief our French NDT community.

Alain, an MT and UT Level 2 Cofrend-certified operator was for many years the NDT representative of the RATP in the CFCM (Railway Maintenance Certification Committee) of the COFREND (the French Confederation for Non-Destructive Testing).

He was also one of the main actors of the writing of all procedures and of the qualification of NDT operators at the RATP MRF (Maintenance of railway rolling stock).
He is among one of those who developed the NDT RATP our business and who made them more accessible in accordance with the technical principles and standards.

He was concerned by his neighbour. His passion for NDT was in compliance with this behaviour; "Anticipate the accident before it happens" was for him more than a motto and an obligation in a utility as the RATP.

As he often said, "It is not crates that we carry, but women and men, and certainly people that you know" or even, "You do not perform NDT for RATP, but for all those who take the underground every morning". Each of his words was oriented towards and for human.

One of us knew him at the RATP Axles Workshops in Paris. Alain had, among other things, developed an ingenious MT tool to check the wheels of the underground (subway in USA) trains faster and with an improved reliability.
He was also a member of the RATP “RE-RAILING” team, a specialized team of maintenance staff, all volunteers, involved in post-derailment response on the railway networks of this company.

We remember him as a warm, pragmatic and competent man. He was above all a man with a lot of field experience, going from workshops to workshops. He brought technical support to RATP NDT agents, and he took pride in transmitting his expertise and experience.

As early riser, he would not hesitate to welcome us just before 7.00 a.m.

We offer our sincerest condolences and our deepest sympathy to his family, and we join in the well-deserved tribute to Alain by all the NDT agents of the railway sector.
